Every month, 90,500 Google searches ask for the NerdWallet retirement calculator by name. That is two thirds of the 135,000 monthly searches for the brand name on its own (Arrowsterr keyword data, November 2026).
This case study uses NerdWallet's SEC filings and our own sitemap count to break down the search plays B2B SaaS teams can use.
From a credit card spreadsheet to a public company
NerdWallet helps consumers and small businesses compare financial products and earns referral fees from the providers they choose. Founder Tim Chen was laid off in 2008 during the financial crisis.
His sister in Australia asked him which credit card had lower foreign transaction fees. Compiling what the big banks offered took him a week, so he sent her an Excel spreadsheet.
The spreadsheet spread far beyond his family, and Chen found little on Google besides marketing material. He spent $800 on hosting, a domain and software and started NerdWallet in 2009.
The site made about $75 in its first year and around $60,000 in its second. By mid-2010, both visitors and revenue on the site were tripling from month to month.
The best no foreign transaction fee credit cards list still answers his sister's question, updated November 2, 2026, with a named writer, reviewer and editor.

The page turns the 2009 spreadsheet into a search result that gets checked every month.
NerdWallet reached about $44 million in revenue in 2014 with no outside equity capital, then raised roughly $105 million in 2015.
In 2020 it bought Know Your Money in the UK and Fundera for small business loans. In November 2021, NerdWallet listed on Nasdaq at $18 a share and raised $140.0 million in net proceeds.

What to take from this:
- Start from one question your buyers keep asking and answer it better than anyone else in your market.
- Keep that answer current, and show the update date and the people who checked it.
- Move to the next question only after the first page earns steady traffic.
What NerdWallet's 10-K filings say about organic search
We read NerdWallet's annual reports on SEC EDGAR for 2021, 2023, 2024 and 2025, which put audited numbers behind its search strategy.
In 2021, over 70% of all traffic to NerdWallet came through direct or unpaid channels. The site averaged 19 million monthly unique users that year, up 23% from 2020.
Its editorial team builds pages for FAQs, featured snippets and video results, and personnel costs in organic marketing rose 33% in 2021.
The 2023 and 2024 filings repeat the over 70% figure, and monthly unique users averaged 23 million in 2023.
After NerdWallet bought Know Your Money in 2020, organic traffic to its UK site grew from about 10,000 monthly sessions to about 130,000 within a year.
The filings also name the risks that come with depending on search:
- NerdWallet depends on search engines, mainly Google, to send traffic and new users to its platform.
- Past changes to search algorithms have caused declines in its traffic and user growth.
- AI-assisted search tools could lower its rankings and cut the traffic that reaches its site.
In the 2025 results, organic search pressure cut credit card revenue 24% to $133.4 million and small business revenue 9%.
Total revenue still grew 22% to $836.6 million, led by insurance, loans and banking. Performance marketing rose to $416.9 million, or 71% of sales and marketing spend, up from 63% in 2024.
NerdWallet is also moving people into registered accounts so it can reach them without relying on search engines, the part most case studies leave out.
What your team can use:
- Report the share of pipeline that depends on Google to your leadership, the way NerdWallet reports it to investors.
- Turn search visitors into users or subscribers, so a ranking drop never cuts you off from them.
- Track how AI answers mention you, using a plan such as our GEO guide for B2B SaaS.
Play 1: calculators that answer a money question
Six tool pages draw more than 300,000 branded searches a month between them, led by the retirement calculator.

Our November 3, 2026 count found 2,371 URLs in NerdWallet's 35 US product sitemaps, including 145 calculators, with 77 of them in mortgages.

The retirement calculator uses the exact phrase people type, "Retirement Calculator," as its H1, and lists every default above the form.
It assumes retirement at 67, a 6% return before retirement and 5% during it, 3% inflation, 2% yearly raises and a life expectancy of 95. A named writer and editor sign the page, which was fact-checked on June 17, 2026.
Plain sections below the tool explain each field for readers and for Google.

The investing calculators hub groups tools by investment growth, retirement and employee equity. Tool pages such as the compound interest calculator link out to more tools.

The mortgage rates page carries the day's date in its title, and its rates were current as of 9:21 AM EST when we opened it.
Its markup covers products, offers, ratings and video, and the page adds an FAQ and links to more mortgage tools.
Lessons for your own tools:
- Build a calculator for the money question your buyers bring to sales, such as cost, payback or savings.
- Name the page after the phrase people type, and list your assumptions in plain words above the form.
- Put a byline and a review date on the tool, the same way you would on an article.
- Link each tool to the next one a buyer will need.
Play 2: reviews and best-of lists for every product
Reviews and comparisons make up 995 of the 2,371 product URLs, about 42%, and best-of and rate lists add another 527.

We sampled 14 of the 61 article sitemaps, and each one held 100 URLs. Of those 1,400 URLs, 1,058 sat in guide folders such as /travel/learn/ and /credit-cards/learn/.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred review opens with a 4.7 NerdWallet rating and a Bottom Line box. Then come pros and cons, a detailed review and a comparison with other cards.
Lower down, "Drawbacks and Considerations" names the card's weak spots, and "How To Decide If It's Right For You" helps readers decide either way.
The page ends with an FAQ and Product, Review and Rating markup, and best-of pages link into it to pass on readers and authority.
B2B teams can use this play fastest, because buyers already search for reviews and comparisons of tools in your category. Our guide to BOFU content covers how to write these pages for software.
Lessons for your review pages:
- Write review pages for the tools your buyers compare you with and the tools they use beside yours.
- Give each review a clear verdict at the top and honest drawbacks lower down.
- Turn the reviews into best-of lists for each use case, and link the lists and reviews both ways.
Play 3: trust signals on every page
Every product page we opened named the people behind it, and most showed an advertiser disclosure near the top.

NerdWallet says business relationships don't shape its advice, recommendations or product reviews, and it fact-checks and corrects errors quickly.

NerdWallet publishes the math behind its stars in a credit card methodology. Cards get 1 to 5 stars in tenths, with a formula for each of 8 categories, and 400+ cards have been reviewed.
Our sitemap count found 40 methodology pages and 263 author and reviewer pages. Each byline links to a profile, so readers and search engines can see who wrote the advice.
"Our content strategy is writing for a consumer with a very specific problem," said Gerry Spratt, then NerdWallet's director of content, in a Q&A with The Hustle.
For banks or fintech buyers, our fintech SEO guide covers these trust signals in a regulated market.
What to take from this:
- Publish a methodology page for every score, ranking or comparison you put out.
- Add author pages with real credentials, and show the writer, reviewer and update date on each page.
- Disclose how you make money near the top of any page that recommends a product, including your own.
What B2B SaaS can learn from NerdWallet's SEO content strategy
Its plays fit B2B software, where buyers weigh cost and compare vendors before they talk to sales. Here is how we would adapt them:
- Build a pricing, ROI or cost calculator named after the phrase your buyers type into Google.
- Publish review and comparison pages for your category, each with a verdict, drawbacks and a methodology page behind it.
- Sign every page with people who have done the work, and add their profiles and a review date.
- Give visitors a reason to stay in touch, such as a free account, a saved report or a newsletter.
Our B2B SaaS SEO guide shows how a small team can fit these pages into a keyword plan without a large newsroom.
In 2025, NerdWallet lost credit card revenue to weaker organic traffic despite 135,000 monthly branded searches. B2B teams should build for search and for direct relationships from the first day.
