SEO vs PPC Statistics 2026: 31 Data Points on Conversions, Cost and Clicks

SEO turns 2.4% of website visitors into leads and PPC turns 1.3%, according to First Page Sage's client data. WordStream by LocaliQ says search ads convert 8.18% of clicks into leads. Both numbers are correct, because each study divides by something different.

Organic results also get about 11 times as many Google clicks as ads (our calculation from SparkToro's 66.61% and 6.01%). So the most useful comparison for your budget is what each channel costs per customer and how long it takes to pay back.

We put four 2026 datasets side by side and traced all 31 stats on this page to the study they came from. Each row shows its date and method, and a calculator near the end shows when SEO catches up with PPC on cost per customer. For SEO data from B2B companies only, see our B2B SEO statistics.

SEO vs PPC Conversion Rate Statistics

Conversion rate is where SEO vs PPC articles disagree the most. The gap comes down to what each study counts as a conversion and what it divides that number by.

Average conversion rate across industries

First Page Sage measured 124 of its own clients from August 2022 to July 2024, and its data leans B2B. Its conversion rate reports divide the leads from each channel by that channel's website visitors.

StatInsightSource

2.6% of B2B visitors from thought leadership SEO become leads, compared with 1.5% from PPC (B2C: 2.1% vs 1.2%) First Page SageMar 2025 · Client data

In this data, SEO turns visitors into leads about 1.8 times as often as PPC (our calculation, 2.4% divided by 1.3%).

SEO vs PPC conversion rate by industry

SEO converts better than PPC in 17 of the 19 industries First Page Sage tracks. Construction is a tie, and higher education is the only industry where PPC comes out ahead.

The widest gaps show up in financial services, real estate and medical devices. We think trust explains much of that, since these are fields where buyers check a company carefully before they get in touch. We look at this in more detail in does SEO work for B2B companies.

Why other studies say PPC converts better

Ruler Analytics tracked 110M+ sessions across 13 industries and found paid search slightly ahead of organic search. Ruler counts qualified leads or sales per session and gives credit to several touchpoints before each conversion.

StatInsightSource
5.4% for paid search compared with 4.9% for organic search across 13 industries, though organic leads in professional services (8.1% vs 6.7%) Ruler AnalyticsMay 2026 · Platform data, 110M+ sessions

WordStream by LocaliQ puts search ads even higher, at 8.18%. That figure divides leads by ad clicks, so it measures how well ads convert the people who click on them.

Interestingly, the winner also changes by segment inside Ruler's own data. In 2025, B2B tech organic search beat paid, while B2B services paid search beat organic.

Lead quality further down the funnel

A form fill is only the first step, and First Page Sage's B2B SaaS funnel data, drawn from 50+ clients over the last decade, shows SEO leads keeping their quality on the way to a sales conversation.

StatInsightSource
51% of SEO MQLs become SQLs in B2B SaaS, compared with 26% of PPC MQLs, and visitor to lead runs 2.1% for SEO against 0.7% for PPC First Page SageJun 2025 · Client data, 50+ SaaS clients

Once a deal becomes an opportunity, the two channels perform about the same, with 36% of SEO opportunities closing against 35% from PPC. The SEO advantage builds up in the earlier stages, which is where bottom of funnel content does most of its work.

What this means for you: Pick one definition of a conversion, such as a qualified lead or a key event in GA4, and use it for both channels. Compare your own SEO and PPC rates with each other before you hold either one up to a benchmark. If PPC wins on form fills, check how many of those leads become SQLs before you move budget.

SEO vs PPC Cost Statistics: CPC, Cost per Lead and CAC

The two channels look most different on cost, and the answer depends on whether you measure a click, a lead or a customer.

What paid search costs in 2026

WordStream by LocaliQ benchmarks thousands of customer campaigns on Google Ads and Microsoft Ads in more than 20 industries. Thankfully for advertisers, the average cost per lead went down this year.

StatInsightSource
$66.69 average cost per lead from Google and Microsoft search ads in 2026, with a $5.42 average CPC, a 6.64% CTR and an 8.18% click to lead rate WordStream by LocaliQJun 2026 · Customer campaigns

Business services firms pay about 40% more per lead than the average advertiser (our calculation, $93.69 against $66.69). Industrial and commercial companies pay $75.19 per lead at an 8.20% conversion rate, and finance and insurance ads convert 2.64% of clicks.

Customer acquisition cost by channel

Cost per lead leaves out everything that happens after the form fill, so cost per customer gives a fairer comparison. First Page Sage tracked spend and new customers at 214 companies from January to August 2026.

B2B non-branded search is getting more expensive

What this means for you: Judge both channels on cost per customer over at least a year, since cost per lead favors whichever channel brings in cheap form fills. As paid clicks on non-branded category terms get more expensive, ranking organically for those terms is worth more each year. Keep paid budget on brand terms and high intent terms where you can measure the return quickly.

Click Share Statistics: Organic vs Paid on Google

Most Google searches now end without a click, and the clicks that remain are shifting a little toward ads, though organic results still win most of them.

Search ad spend and the cost of a visit

More money keeps going into search ads, and we expect that to keep pushing click prices up. Contentsquare's benchmark of 6,500+ websites shows organic visits falling while each visit costs more.

StatInsightSource

What this means for you: Organic results still collect most Google clicks, though 68% of searches now end without any click. Paid CTR is the steadier number on AI Overview queries, so ads are the safer choice when you need predictable traffic on those terms. For organic search, add AI citations to your reporting next to rankings.

Do Searchers Trust Organic Results More Than Ads?

Page One Power surveyed 1,000 Americans about which search results they trust. Only a small group trusts ads more than organic results.

StatInsightSource
Half of Americans trust organic search results the most, compared with 5% who trust paid results more, and 46% trust both equally Page One PowerMay 2025 · Survey of 1,000

We think this helps explain why First Page Sage's SEO lead is widest in financial services, real estate and medical devices. In those fields, a high ranking does some of the persuading that an ad has to pay for.

What this means for you: Put your proof, such as case studies and customer reviews, on the pages that rank. For purchases where trust matters most, plan for organic search to carry more of the persuasion, and use ads to reach people who already know your name.

How Long SEO and PPC Take to Pay Back

PPC brings results within weeks, while SEO takes longer to start and returns more over a full campaign.

How long SEO takes

SEO is slow to start, since in First Page Sage's 2026 data it needs more than six months on average to win a first customer. Ahrefs also found that very few new pages reach the top 10 within a year.

StatInsightSource

1.74% of new pages reach Google's top 10 within a year, and 40.82% of the pages that do get there within a month AhrefsMay 2025 · 1M new pages

For that reason, we suggest giving SEO at least two quarters before you judge it. Our guide on when B2B companies should invest in SEO covers the timing in more detail.

How long PPC takes

PPC runs on a much shorter clock. In First Page Sage's data, PPC starts returning money within weeks, and its monthly budgets overlap with what SEO programs cost.

2 to 5 weeks for PPC to return, compared with 1 to 3 years for SEO, with PPC costing about $3K to $30K a month and SEO about $2K to $15K First Page Sage2026 · Client data

ROI over a full campaign

The gap in return is wide by the end of a campaign. First Page Sage's ROI figures come from client campaigns in 25+ industries running through Q4 2025, and the average campaign lasted 2.7 years.

What this means for you: Use PPC for leads in the first two quarters and to test which keywords bring in buyers. Start SEO at the same time, since it needs more than six months on average before the first customer shows up. Report SEO on a 12 to 24 month view so a slow start doesn't get mistaken for failure.

Should You Run SEO and PPC Together?

If you run both channels, the data below looks at how teams split the budget, what happens when you pause ads and a new paid channel worth watching.

The budget split most teams land on

Agency practice and survey data both lean toward SEO, with First Page Sage clients giving it the larger share of budget and B2B marketers rating it their top ROI channel.

Do ads take clicks from your organic results?

Two older studies looked at what happens when you pause search ads. They reach different answers, and the difference comes from the type of keyword each one tested.

Google's studies covered search ads in general, while eBay tested brand keywords, where searchers were already looking for eBay. Surprisingly, those brand ads brought eBay no measurable short-term lift. Both studies are more than ten years old, so test this on your own account before you change anything.

A new paid channel: ChatGPT Ads

First Page Sage's 2026 study includes ChatGPT Ads. Across 14 accounts over seven weeks, it showed the lowest B2B cost per customer in the study at $468, roughly 42% below PPC (see the row above).

The sample is small and the channel is new, so we'd treat ChatGPT Ads as a test budget for now. Our AI SEO statistics cover how people use ChatGPT for search.

What this means for you: Start with PPC for speed and keyword testing, then move budget toward SEO as your rankings arrive. Test pausing brand ads on terms where you already rank first organically, and keep non-brand ads running where you don't rank yet. Try ChatGPT Ads with a small test budget and measure cost per customer from the start.

Popular SEO vs PPC Stats We Left Out

These numbers show up on many SEO vs PPC pages. We traced each one as far as we could, and none held up well enough to use.

  • "94% of search clicks go to organic results" is usually credited to a GroupM UK study from 2011 or 2012 that we couldn't find online. Similarweb's 2026 data puts organic at about 92% of organic and paid clicks combined (our calculation).
  • "SEO leads close at 14.6%, outbound leads at 1.7%" has appeared in posts since 2013 and gets credited to HubSpot, Intergrowth and Doyen Digital, with no study, sample or date we could find. We use First Page Sage's funnel rates instead.
  • "70 to 80% of users ignore paid search ads" circulates without a named study, and 2026 click data shows paid ads gaining share of Google clicks.
  • "SEO delivers 8x ROI, double the 4x of PPC" is credited to an NP Digital study of 119 companies that we couldn't find, so we can't check its method. We use First Page Sage's 748% and 36%, which come with a stated method.
  • "Organic search drives 53% of website traffic and paid search 15%" comes from BrightEdge research published in 2019, which is too old for a 2026 comparison.
  • "Organic search acquires customers at 87.4% lower cost than paid search" comes from a January 2022 Terakeet report based on its own customers, with no sample size. First Page Sage's 2026 data is newer and shows the gap depends on the type of SEO.

Our Sourcing Rules

  • Every stat links to the company or research group that ran the study.
  • Each row shows when the data was published and how it was gathered, such as client data, a survey or a clickstream panel.
  • When an agency measured its own clients, the row says so, and every First Page Sage number on this page is client data.
  • When good studies disagree, we show both numbers side by side and explain what each one divides by.
  • Studies from before 2020 carry an Older study tag, and figures marked as our calculation are simple math on the sourced numbers.

FAQ

Is SEO better than PPC?

In First Page Sage's client data, SEO pays back more over a one to three year horizon, with 748% B2B ROI against 36% for PPC. Thought leadership SEO also costs less per B2B customer at $647, against $802 for PPC. PPC starts returning in 2 to 5 weeks, so it's the better choice when you need leads this quarter.

Which converts better, SEO or PPC?

The answer changes with how each study defines a conversion. First Page Sage counts leads per website visitor and has SEO at 2.4% and PPC at 1.3%. Ruler Analytics counts qualified leads or sales per session and has paid search at 5.4% and organic at 4.9%, while WordStream by LocaliQ puts search ads at 8.18% of clicks.

What percentage of Google clicks go to ads vs organic results?

From January to April 2026, 66.61% of US Google clicks went to organic results and 6.01% went to paid ads, according to SparkToro and Similarweb. Another 27.38% went to Google's own properties, and 68% of searches ended without a click. The paid share rose from 1.12% in 2024, partly because the 2024 panel had more ad blocker users.

How much does a PPC lead cost in 2026?

Search ads cost $66.69 per lead on average in 2026, at a $5.42 average cost per click (WordStream by LocaliQ). Business services pay $93.69 per lead, and attorneys pay the most at $131.63. The average cost per lead fell for the first time in five years.

How long does SEO take compared with PPC?

First Page Sage finds PPC returns in 2 to 5 weeks, while SEO returns over 1 to 3 years. Thought leadership SEO takes 6.4 months on average to bring a first customer, and basic SEO takes 8.6 months. Ahrefs found that only 1.74% of new pages reach Google's top 10 within a year.

Do people trust Google ads less than organic results?

In a Page One Power survey of 1,000 Americans, half trusted organic search results the most, while 5% trusted paid results more and 46% trusted both equally.

Should I run SEO and PPC at the same time?

Running both is a common setup, and First Page Sage's clients usually settle on about 75% SEO and 25% PPC. Use PPC for early leads and keyword testing while SEO builds up. Test pausing brand ads where you already rank first, since eBay's 2014 experiments found brand keyword ads had no measurable short-term benefit.

Are AI Overviews hurting SEO more than PPC?

In Seer Interactive's data so far, yes. Organic CTR on AI Overview queries fell to 1.3% in December 2025 before recovering to 2.4% by February 2026, while paid CTR on the same queries rose from 14.6% to 16.2%. Seer calls paid CTR its most steady and predictable metric.
